The Death of a Hive

Bees_web

We have some sad news on the bee front. Don has checked the bees over and over again throughout this cold winter, only to find, just a few days ago, that all the bees are dead.

After talking to lots of fellow beekeepers we found this is a frequent occurrence this time of year. We’ve had trouble with hornets as has everyone else. It seems that our queen probably died in late fall, maybe from a hornet. And it is likely the young hive found it too difficult to create a new queen in the cold.

On the bright side, Don was able to get quite a bit of honey and it is delicious! We plan to start again this year; with two hives this time.
